What is Spiritual Direction?

A spiritual life is not about escaping the world and its daily requirements; it’s about infusing the world with a vision of the holy.

Listening to your life

We view spiritual direction to be a process of listening to your life, of seeking to name the deeper currents of your life, so that you more fully come into your own as a person. We believe that spiritual direction should be a kind of catalyst, activating greater ease, purpose, and fulfillment for your life.

At the same time, and paradoxically, we don’t believe spiritual direction is about getting better. That can be such a tiresome climb! We believe it’s about learning to be present to, and to love, ourselves. This spiritual work helps us surrender into a Presence from which we engage the messy, beautiful minutia of our lives.

As spiritual director, we view our work as being a companion on your journey.  We believe your mind, body, emotions, and Spirit are potent pathways for guidance, and that the Divine is constantly speaking to you through these channels.

We love the playful way that Tosha Silver frames it:

What if the Divine is constantly igniting roadside flares to get our attention?  What if there actually is a Supreme Organizing Principle with an unbridled sense of humor?  And what if we each have this ardent inner suitor who is writing us love letters every day that often go unopened?

How it works - Spiritual Direction with Scott McRae

My style is inquisitive, direct, non-judgmental, and compassionate. I have training in spiritual counseling, coaching, and the Enneagram and tailor our sessions to what works best for you. I invite you to explore the questions, concerns, hopes, and wonderings about your life.  We can use conversation, meditation, soul cards, dreams, readings, and various exercises to explore these currents, and I hold all of our conversations in confidence.

The gifts of spiritual direction can take many surprising forms in your life. Often, it feels like a journey without a fixed ending that, nonetheless, is driven by a desire to be more real and more aligned with the Divine.

As you are discerning whether spiritual direction is right for you, please let me know if you have questions. Thank you.
