We navigate our lives in the tension between the old and the new.
There is a Lifeforce in us that pushes us to become new. There is a counterforce that pushes back and says, “you better not try that, it could make things worse.”
Religions, politics, families, communities, institutions, individuals - all of these wrestle with this tension between staying the same and becoming something new.
In her autobiography, actor Viola Davis shares words that I suspect we can all resonate with:
"I learned from writer Joseph Campbell, that a hero is someone born into a world where they don't fit in. They are then summoned on a call to an adventure that they are reluctant to take. What is the adventure? A revolutionary transformation of self."
Joseph Campbell was attuned to the Lifeforce driving toward newness. He called this energy the "call to adventure." This call breaks into the old. It interrupts our tired routines, our habitual fears, our emotional and thought patterns that no longer fit.
The call to adventure is the self seeking transformation.
The call of the Spirit is the Self seeking transformation.
Every client I work with, without exception, feels like they don’t fit in, or like the life they’re used to doesn’t fit them anymore. They feel the outer world they live in is old in some way, and they are following a summons of the soul to change their inner world.
And once their inner world changes, their outer world can’t help but change.
If you’re looking for an exploration into spiritual transformation, I encourage you to check out my three Sacred Journeys classes (starting 9/17/24) and my 7-month Sacred Journeys group (starting 11/8/24).
These offerings provide a map for those who feel summoned on an adventure, and they bring together people who don’t fit in to conventional spiritual perspectives. I hope to see you there!
