Neuroscientists tell us that 95% of our thoughts are the same today as they were yesterday. Which means that we have about a 5% chance of thinking up a creative or unique thought. And the researchers find that, by the the time lunch rolls around, much of that spontaneous energy is usually used up.
This all goes to show how patterned our way of thinking can become. Limiting beliefs and habits keep a ceiling on what we think, what we do, and what’s possible for the future. All of us have these limiting beliefs and habits that box in our lives. They confine how we think about our potential, our family and friends, money, and interestingly, spiritual growth.
Many of great geniuses were told as children that they would not succeed. These geniuses had to transcend the limiting beliefs that were implanted in them. Rather then stagnating in a fixed mindset, they had to find their way into a growth mindset. This growth mindset is one of the great gifts of spirituality.
Sadly, so many of our social structures can actually hamper the spirit and growth, even the places designed to nurture them - schools, families, religions. We have to break free, to let our spirits and our minds think and roam beyond the fixed mindset. The reality is that the spirit is wild, playful, and creative. Lifeforce is always wanting to take on new and vibrant forms. This is Grace.
When we get beyond limiting beliefs and habits and the fixed mindset, we unleash a growth dynamic that changes everything. At every point in our life, there is the possibility of living into our next-best-selves. The growth mindset helps us recognize and realize this possibility.
This is not about improving something that’s wrong or righting our moral failures. This is about moving into a new vitality of living, growing our minds to fit the size of our spirits. And it’s about activating a higher level of contribution in the world, so that all people and beings can grow in spirit.
As far as making this growth mindset more of reality in your life, I know of no better tool than the Enneagram. It is a map for spiritual growth unlike any other. I encourage you to check out the Enneagram intro class I’m teaching in June, and to share it with someone you think might benefit.
