Life Reminds Us to Let Go

I’ve been sick with a cold this past week. A silver lining was that I endured it on the North Shore of Lake superior. The annoying lining was that I was planning to continue my group and client work while I was there.

One by one I had to reschedule my sessions. I kept hoping that the next day I would feel better and could carry on with my work. They all got rescheduled. Everyone received the news kindly and supportively.

I don’t like to be sick. I like even less canceling commitments because I’m sick. But truth be told, as I look back in the week I feel good about letting go of the hyper-responsibility script that I’ve shouldered for my adult life.

My illness invited me to be responsible in a different way. I was invited to be responsive to a deeper knowing that was very clear when listening to my body.

I was invited to let go of a “should” and to align with wiser presence within.

Life serves up opportunities to let go all the time. And viewed from a spiritual lens, that might be one of life’s main jobs.

Over and over we contend with things not going our way. Occasionally it’s good to push back and shape events. More often, it’s good to observe, let go, and listen for our wiser presence within.

I still have a cold but do feel better. I know that I want to carry this day more lightly. Fewer “shoulds” and more wise presence.

Today I think I can manage my two Zoom sessions and will reschedule the in-person one. That feels right.

How about you? What is life inviting you to let go of? What is your wise presence inviting you to carry more lightly?
