When All Else Fails, Unplug It

I've become quite good at fixing technology. I've received training from great technological minds. I have learned how to fix computers, smart TVs, my smart toothbrush, etc. I can sum up the vast expanse of my knowledge in two words: unplug it.

I’ve also received training from great spiritual minds. I’ve spent years studying and practicing the craft of spiritual care. When it comes to what people need for spiritual comfort or repair, I can sum up my vast amount of learning and experience in two words: unplug yourself.

The more common way of talking about spiritual unplugging is “letting go.” There have been countless times when I have felt myself in the vice grip of overwhelm or frustration. Then, with practice, I have learned to flip the letting-go switch in a way that changes the moment profoundly.

The switch that happens in this moment of release amounts to stepping into a larger cosmic frame. I’m placing myself within a larger picture, part of a universal process.

There’s a common misconception that letting go or surrender is the same thing as resignation, but they’re not the same. Rather than the sense of defeat that comes with resignation, letting go turns the moment over to a larger power that brings deep comfort. It releases us into a profound truth that holds and assures us. It aligns us with a force, a grace, that brings empowerment and growth, like springtime leaves to the trees.

Letting go is a spiritual reset. It refreshes the human operating system.

Sometimes we get lucky and just fall into letting go. But it also is a spiritual capacity that we can develop.

I’m going to be offering a weekly book study that takes a deep dive into the emotional-spiritual workings of letting go. Starting in January, we will be walking through David R. Hawkins’ profound book, Letting Go: The Pathway of Surrender. This Zoom group will be part learning community and part support group as we navigate the anxieties that arise with this new year.
